My Speech

Did you know that    horses die a year because of whipping?! Well, today I’m going to talk to you about why we should stop whipping horses. By whipping them, you are not only damaging the horses health but you are also putting yourself at risk. Riders may look professional whipping their horses, but it just makes the horses upset.

Firstly whipping a horse damages it’s health. Can you imagine doing cross country and 400 metres away from the finish line you start getting whipped? Well, that’s what happens to the horse. A jockey starts whipping their horses in the last 200-400 metres of the race when the horse is most tired. Horse skin is thicker than human skin but only by less than a millimetre. Although their skin is thicker, they get hurt easier. One man decided to whip his leg as hard as people whip their horses and after half an hour, his leg was swollen.

Now you know how it can damage your horse's health, you’re going to find out how it can damage your own health. Sometimes when you whip a horse it scars. If it scars the next time you try and whip it, it will bolt. When a horse bolts, it goes into a flat gallop and you can’t control it. It can also rear up or buck. If this happens, you could flung out of the saddle.  If it is a movie horse, you are in a bit more danger. If the movie includes whips or wooden broadswords, you need to be extremely careful. Whip a horse gently and you are in less danger. In the book Stardust and the daredevil ponies, Stardust was terribly scarred. If you put something near her she would react.

Lastly, it doesn’t actually work. Studies show that hearing the sound of the whip is what makes the horse move. Feeling the pain actually slows it down. Therefore whipping a horse is useless. It just makes the horse upset. If you whip a horse before a jump, the horse won't jump properly. If you shorten your whip and whip the saddle, you might just get a better sound. You won't be hurting your horse either.

I urge you to think about all of those poor horses getting whipped and suffering. BE SMART AND STOP WHIPPING HORSES!!!

Winter Field Day

On Tuesday the 18th of August, Meadowbank, once again, went to Winter Field day with at least 11 other schools.

Freya was injured but still went and watched her team. "We won 4 games." she said. "Some of the teams were St. Kents, Kings, Victoria Ave and Cornwall Park." All of the teams played really well. Even the 4 teams that lost against her did really well.

They will be going to the summer field day next summer so you better watch out!

The paddock

One sunny Saturday, a piebald Clydesdale walked into and lush green paddock. At the very same time, a skippy chestnut gelding entered at the other end. The exhausted Clydesdale bumped into something soft in the dead centre of the paddock. Annoyed, the Clydesdale pushed the skippy chestnut gelding back towards the gate. The piebald pushed the gelding back even more. Angry the skippy chestnut pushed the Clydesdale back towards the other gate. The Clydesdale stuck a hoof out, gesturing for the gelding to get out of the paddock. The gelding happily refused and held his head high. The gelding gestured for the Clydesdale to get out. Angry at the gelding, the Clydesdale reared up. He felt a tug on his tail. Confused, the Clydesdale turned around to see a little chestnut colt standing at his plaited tail. He politely stuck his hoof out asking to get through. He waved at the huge Clydesdale. Annoyed, the Clydesdale stomped on the colts tail. All of a sudden, the colt was swiftly kicked out of the paddock. Then, the chestnut colt, trotted off to get the Clydesdale's owner. Thankful his little pest had gone he continued rearing up and bucking. The gelding felt a big kick on his rump. An annoyed little Lipperzzaner  gestured for them to get out. He annoyed the gelding so much, that the gelding stomped on the little filly and kicked him out of the paddock. She went to get his owner. They continued fighting until the gelding and the Clydesdale heard their names being called. Worried, they turned around to see their owners holding lead ropes. Their lead ropes got clipped on, and a second later they were lead out of the paddock. At the same time, the colt and the filly entered. They stood in front of each other wondering what to do next. The colt decided they should share. The gelding and Clydesdale were never seen again.

My new reading goal

My new reading goal is to re-organize information to answer questions. To succeed in my goal I need to look through the WHOLE story to find my answers, skim and scan, pull out answers from different places, and make sure I find all the information that answers the question.

I hope I achieve this by the end of the year.

My new key competency goal

My new key competency goal is relating to others by looking after children who are new at school. To succeed in my goal, I need to check if the new kids have people to play with, help them in class and include them in games.

I hope I achieve this goal by the end of the year.

My new maths goal

My new maths goal is to solve division and multiplication problems involving decimals. To succeed in my goal I need to make sure I read the question carefully, use what I know to answer the question and check my answer using other strategies.

I hope I achieve my goal before the end of the year.

My new writing goal

My new writing goal is to use paragraphs all the time. To succeed in my goal I need to plan my work, always start each paragraph with a topic sentence and check my ideas in each paragraph relate to each other.

I hope I achieve this goal by the end of the year.
